Plants in A Space to Read Balcony Garden sponsored by Viking

A magnificent flowering Cornus kousa takes centre stage, setting the tone for a calming and harmonious space to read. The planting has a predominantly verdant backbone, with accent colors of white, pink and soft yellow

Broadly conical in shape, this large shrub or small tree produces tiny green flowers in June, which are surrounded by showy, creamy-white, petal-like bracts, that fade to lovely shades of pink as they age. In autumn the dark green leaves turn crimson-purple, and mature trees produce strawberry-like fruits. It鈥檚 an excellent specimen tree for a small garden or woodland edge, and the leaf colour is best in fertile, well-drained, neutral to acid soil.

Bergenia ciliata 鈥楲arge Leaf鈥 鈥 elephant鈥檚 ears

An evergreen, clump-forming perennial with large, round, hairy leaves, tinged red early in the season. In spring, red stems bear white flowers that age to pink. Leaves may be damaged by frost, but fresh ones are produced in spring.

Bergenia is often considered fairly municipal genus, however we are using a species called ciliata which is a really interesting plant. The leaves are large, deeply veined and hairy, and add a fantastic and unusual texture to a planting scheme.鈥

Ever popular, this plant is smothered in showy clusters of pure white, sweet pea-like flowers from June to September among grey-green leaves. A vigorous, perennial climber, it looks lovely scrambling over a sunny wall or through a hedge or evergreen shrub, although initially it needs to be tied into supports. Unlike the annual sweet pea, it has no fragrance.

Geranium sylvaticum 鈥楢濒产耻尘鈥 鈥 wood cranesbill

A compact herbaceous perennial, with pale green basal leaves, deeply divided with lobed segments, and pure white, saucer-shaped flowers in late spring and early summer.

Plant lists are provided by the designer of the garden as a guide to the plants they hope to use in the garden based on the time of year, the location and the Client Brief. The plants that feature at the Show depends on a variety of factors such as weather during the growing season and availability. While the designers try to update lists where possible, the accuracy of the list cannot be guaranteed.
