More about this episode
The fifth episode in the series sees Jo Whiley meeting broadcaster and gardener Monty Don at his home, Longmeadow, in Herefordshire, in a special collaboration between the RHS and the BBC ahead ahead of this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. As they spend time in the garden together, Monty reflects on how the space has developed since he and his family first arrived to an empty field, and shares memories of the early years of building both the house and the garden with limited resources.
The visit also explores the different areas that make up Longmeadow, including parts rarely seen on camera and the ‘jewel garden’, inspired by Monty’s past work in jewellery. Along the way, he talks Jo through the day to day reality of growing and maintaining the garden, from producing food throughout the year to the role it plays in family life. The episode highlights Monty’s practical approach to gardening and his ongoing commitment to working with the seasons, including his enjoyment of growing and eating simple crops such as lettuce.
